The Opportunity

We are looking for a Mid-Senior PHP Developer to join our team in Sydney. The PHP Developer will be responsible for integrating and managing backend services on both existing projects but also new builds. The PHP specific integrations will depend on the client’s requirements, which currently can range between using the MVC framework Laravel and CMS systems such as Drupal or WordPress. 


  • Responsible for designing and implementing new features and functionality, establishing and guiding the website’s architecture
  • Building re-usable PHP modules and integrating them with various frameworks (Laravel) or platforms (Drupal, WordPress)
  • Solve performance problems and architectural challenges
  • Integration of user-facing elements developed by front-end developers
  • Ability to upskill in new PHP based frameworks, platforms without guidance
  • Review existing projects from a technical perspective with a given set of requirements and communicate solution options to technical leads and project managers

Essential skills

  • 2-4 years of PHP hands-on development experience of building commercial, responsive web applications
  • Deep understanding of PHP 5+ and object oriented programming
  • Strong knowledge of at least one MVC based PHP web framework (e.g. Laravel, Symfony)
  • Familiarity with at least 1 template engine (e.g. blade, twig)
  • Experience with at least one PHP based CMS (e.g. Drupal, WordPress)
  • Solid understanding of the MVC design pattern
  • Experience in programming custom modules that conform to best practices
  • Experience integrating open source and third-party applications into existing systems
  • Thorough understanding of relational databases and experience with using an ORM mapper (e.g. Eloquent, Doctrine) for database modelling
  • Solid understanding of REST and ability to build custom REST APIs
  • Excellent debugging skills
  • Proficient in maintenance, administration and deployment of PHP projects
  • Basic understanding of AJAX, HTML, JavaScript, and CSS
  • Experience of building responsive websites
  • Familiarity with git and ability to setup your own version control environment
  • Exposure to Agile web development
  • Ability to communicate technical ideas to business users, team members and stakeholders
